Volunteer Program
At SMA, our goal is not only to provide quality medical
care, but also to make our community a more enjoyable place in which to live.
One way we accomplish this is by bringing the community into our offices.
Through our volunteer program, students get the opportunity to learn about the
medical field while helping someone in need. Retired or non-working persons find
an important use for their skills by giving back to the community.
In 1989, we established the Volunteer Program. Volunteers
hold a variety of positions including:
Office
Volunteers: Volunteers assist in medical records,
radiology, vision and surgery waiting areas. They also make reminder calls,
file, greet and direct patients.
Friendly Companion
Program: Senior volunteers assist homebound patients with
writing letters, grocery shopping and other errands.
Friendly Caller
Volunteers: Volunteers call homebound patients once a week
for socialization and friendly discussion.
Thinking of You
Program: Volunteers send notes and cards to clients to
cheer them up and to let them know that someone is thinking of them.
Silver Advocate
Program: This program was designed to recognize the
special needs of our senior patients. Our volunteers greet patients in Southwest
Medical Associates' reception areas. The advocates/volunteers are available to
answer questions about services and community resources, place phone calls and
arrange transportation.
